Legislative Corner

The BCOM team has been working diligently on legislative efforts to support the osteopathic medical community. Co-founder and President John Hummer, Founding Dean George Mychaskiw, Chief of Staff Justin McHorse, Dr. Scott Cyrus, Dr. Hugo Vilchis, and BCOM Governmental Affairs Liaison Pilar Faulkner were actively engaged in meetings over the past month with NM legislative interim committees and members of Governor Martinez’s Cabinet.

They have conveyed BCOM’s efforts to engage regional hospitals and health facilities to partner with BCOM on preceptor, clinical clerkship, and residency development for student placement during their 3rd and 4th year rotations and Graduate Medical Education.

Moreover, they collectively advocated for support to fund the Osteopathic Loan for Service funding legislation (H.B. 103), which would play an instrumental role in recruiting BCOM graduates to practice in New Mexico’s underserved communities.

The group has met with the following entitites:

  • Cabinet Secretary of Indian Affairs, Deputy Secretary of Economic Development, and Program Manager for Higher Education
  • Legislative Interim Committees:
