Mitchell Weaver Awarded Amy & John L. Hummer Scholarship in Honor of Lloyd M. Hummer, MD

The Southwest Foundation for Osteopathic Education & Research (SWFOER) has awarded BCOM medical student Mitchell Weaver, a member of the class of 2020, the Amy & John L. Hummer Scholarship in honor of Lloyd M. Hummer, MD.

The scholarship was established by the Hummers in 2017 in honor of John’s father,  Lloyd M. Hummer, MD. The scholarship is open to students who have completed the first year of medical school at BCOM with an average cumulative grade of at least 80 percent. Applicants are required to write a short essay and provide a list of all charitable, community, and volunteer projects they’ve been involved with since starting college. Recipients can use the annual award to cover tuition, books, room and board, and other such expenses as approved by the scholarship committee.

Weaver is originally from Carmel, Indiana and he plans to go into orthopedic surgery. A lifelong athlete, he became interested in the field after having a surgery himself at age 16. “It afforded me the opportunity to continue my athletic career, which shaped me into the person I am today,” he said of the experience. “It would be an extremely gratifying feeling to help young men and women that are in the same position I found myself.”

Weaver said he was both surprised and honored to find out he’d been awarded the scholarship. “It really means a lot to be awarded for the merit of my work and it will be something that pushes me to continue to work hard. It’s really amazing to know I have this kind of support from Mr. and Mrs. Hummer, as well as the entire foundation.”
