Mindfulness & Gratitude: A Message From the BCOM Mental Health Task Force

A message from Student Government Association Vice President Jessica Jacob:

We have recently formed a Mental Health Task Force at school that will be trying to have various activities bi-weekly to raise awareness about mental health, and more importantly – promote wellness in our student body. Our lives are tough as it is… and I am hoping these activities will boast student happiness and build up our community here at BCOM. There will be a led yoga session coming in the next 2 weeks-details to follow.

With that, we had a first activity this week during the Lunch & Learn – Mindfulness and Gratitude. Dr. JC led a guided meditation, and if this is something you are interested in there are several apps that you can download: Headspace, 10% Happier, Mindspace, and Insight Timer (meditation timer that has guided and non-guided meditations).

I led a session on gratitude and how it has been scientifically shown to improve happiness. If you don’t believe me – check it out for yourself here: https://youtu.be/oHv6vTKD6lg (This is only 7 minutes – you know you want to check it out….;) )

If this is something you are interested in giving a shot – I have purchased Thank-You Cards located upstairs in the student affairs office. If you fill one out, and would like for it to be sent out, including a note about Burnout in Medicine (attached here), put an address on it, and I will pick them up weekly and will send them out on your behalf. Give it a try – you might be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Happy studying!
