Hello my friends and thank you for your interest in the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM). I encourage you to explore our website as you learn more about our college and its mission, curriculum and environment. I congratulate you on the decision to investigate a career in osteopathic medicine, a philosophy of wellness that has improved the lives of millions of people and promises a better approach to the difficult healthcare challenges our society faces in the future.
BCOM started with the vision to improve the health and well-being of the Southwestern US and Northern Mexico by increasing both the number and diversity of physicians in the regional workforce. As our mission statement declares:
Para la gente y el futuro: For the people and the future, the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine at New Mexico State University (BCOM) is dedicated to improving the health of the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico through culturally competent undergraduate, graduate and continuing osteopathic medical education, research and clinical service to the community.
BCOM is focused on increasing diversity in the physician workforce and fostering a practice of life-long learning, compassion, respect and excellence in its students.
To accomplish this, a team of champions has come together, composed of experienced, respected and dedicated leaders in medical and higher education, to build a program that will enable you to feel well prepared and confident as you progress through the journey of medical school, internship, residency and practice. Whether you choose to pursue a path of primary care medicine in the rural clinics throughout New Mexico, West Texas or undergo deep subspecialty practice in the quaternary care centers in major cities across the world, this osteopathic medical college will prepare you beyond the expected standard.
Our curriculum is student-focused, clinically-oriented and delivered with careful attention to educational methods and learning style, so that you will be successful in both the high-stakes objective testing required of contemporary physicians and have the cognitive skills to excel in caring for your patients. Among the tools at your disposal will be a state-of-the-art simulation center, incorporating both standardized patients and high-fidelity mannequins and evaluation systems, a complete medical library, a hybrid gross and virtual anatomy lab, including MRI, CT and other medical imaging and an OMM facility, led by professional, university-experienced clinicians. BCOM has developed a large clinical clerkship network, with sites in New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and Chihuahua, Mexico. These experiences vary from the core general medicine and surgery basics to electives in fields as specialized as cardiology, anesthesiology and radiation oncology. Similarly, BCOM is facilitating the development of numerous residency opportunities throughout the region that include this spectrum of practice, from Family Medicine and Psychiatry in Las Cruces to Urology and Anesthesiology in El Paso, to name just a very few.
Although we are not part of New Mexico State University (NMSU), our close relationship with NMSU allows our students to enjoy all the life, social, athletic and educational services of NMSU students. This includes, but is not limited to intramural sports, student clubs, housing, meals, health services and library and tutoring services. Our physical location in the Land of Enchantment and City of Dreams permits a wealth of outdoor experiences and adventures on both sides of the border in a culture of joy and passion for life.
Once again, congratulations on your decision to make a difference and do something important with your life. The practice of medicine is a sacred trust given to those with the intellectual, emotional and physical fitness to routinely intervene in some of the most critical and intimate moments of peoples’ lives. Often, a physician is an individual’s first and last human contact. That is a duty we take extremely seriously and that is the ethos that drives this institution. This is not an easy path that you have chosen, nor should it be, but it will likely be the most rewarding thing you will do in your life. We hope that you will choose to partner with BCOM as we work para la gente y el futuro, for the people and the future. If you have any questions that we have not answered or if I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to write me at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are ever in the area, feel free to stop by and see us. Our Office of Student Affairs will be happy to show you around.
