General Information for Applicants

Deadline

The deadline to apply to the Foundations in Biomedical Science program for the 2018– ’19 academic year is July 1, 2018.  Applicants are responsible for insuring that all materials are received by that date.  Applications not complete as of July 7, 2018, cannot be considered for admission to the class matriculating in August 2018.

The Application Process

Admission to the Foundations in Biomedical Science program at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine requires that you have earned a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or an equivalent institution in Canada or Mexico prior to the start of the program. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree from an institution where English is not the primary language of instruction must take the TOEFL exam and submit the results as part of their application.

Applicants are required to have successfully completed, with a grade of C- or higher, the following courses prior to matriculation into the program:

1 year (6 credit hours) of English
1 year (8 credit hours) of general biology w/ labs
1 year (8 credit hours) of general chemistry w/ labs
1 year (8 credit hours) of organic chemistry w/ labs, or
1 semester each of organic chemistry and biochemistry w/labs (8 credit hours)
1 year (8 credit hours) of physics with labs

A non-refundable application processing fee of $50.00 is required, and must be received by our Admissions Office, in order for the application to be considered complete.  This fee may be paid by money order in $US sent to the address provided at the end of this application OR it may be paid by credit card by calling Ms. Renee Huber at 1-575-674-2282.  Personal checks will not be accepted. The complete application form, processing fee, and all supporting materials such as letters of recommendation, official transcripts, and standardized test scores must be received prior to July 7, 2018 in order for the application to be considered complete and eligible for review.  Once your application becomes complete, you will be notified that your status has changed to “under review”.

Application Review

You are encouraged to apply early, as completed applications are reviewed and decisions are made on a rolling basis.  If the Admissions Committee considers your application competitive, you will be contacted to schedule a phone interview.  Following the interview, the Admissions Committee will make a final decision as to your potential for success in the program.  Candidates should expect to receive a decision within 1 – 2 weeks of a phone interview. If notified of acceptance you must confirm your intention to enter the program by emailing us at FBMS@bcomnm.org and sending a US $750.00 non-refundable* deposit prior to May 31, 2018 to hold your place in the program .  After May 31, 2018, a US $1,500 non-refundable deposit is required to hold a place in the program.  Your email and deposit must be received within the time period specified in your offer of acceptance.  The deposit will be credited towards your Fall 2018 tuition.

*In the case of students who receive an acceptance into a US medical school conferring the DO or MD degree, and who provide official proof of that acceptance, 80% of the tuition deposit will be refunded up until May 31, 2018.  No refunds will be made after that date.
