Fully Online Preparation for US Medical Studies

¡Bienvenidos! Welcome to the home page of BCOM’s Online Fundamental Biomedical Sciences program!

Would you like to improve your chances of being accepted to a US medical school, but don’t want the cost of a traditional face-to-face preparatory or enhancement program?  Or perhaps you can’t relocate or reschedule your life around a fixed academic schedule?  If so, this program might be a logical choice for you on your path towards strengthening your medical school application credentials.

This challenging 10 month certificate program is conveniently offered entirely online.  The curriculum consists of graduate level coursework, presented at the same level of difficulty as in our medical curriculum.  It is designed specifically to provide students the opportunity to demonstrate or gain competence in the basic biomedical sciences in preparation for

  • Application to a US medical school
  • Standardized test taking for pre-medical applicants

Foreign medical graduates studying to take the USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1 will find this material highly beneficial in preparing for these exams.

To learn more about our program, please take a moment to read through the information that follows.  If you would like to contact us to learn more about the program, don’t hesitate to email or call.

We look forward to hearing from you!

  • BCOM’s Online Fundamental Biomedical Sciences program is an exciting new concept in medical school preparatory studies, designed and taught by BCOM’s medical school faculty and offered entirely online. This unique program enables students to test their readiness for study at a US medical school. The program also offers the option for Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) preparation for those applying to US medical schools who need to take or repeat the MCAT exam. Students who successfully finish all program coursework (grade of C, 70% or better in all program courses), will receive a certificate of completion from the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine and will be provided with a letter of evaluation, summarizing their performance in the program, when applying to any accredited US medical school.

The Online Fundamental Biomedical Sciences program may be right for you if :

  • you are not able to relocate to our campus in Las Cruces, New Mexico
  • you are seeking the convenience offered by the more flexible scheduling of an online program
  • you are interested in pursuing a medical school enhancement program, but prefer a less costly alternative to face-to-face programs to initially demonstrate your competitive potential
  • you wish to enrich your background to further enhance your medical school application by completing additional biomedical coursework
  • you received your undergraduate degree more than two years ago, and wish to take current graduate coursework in the biomedical sciences
  • your MCAT scores are outdated or not sufficiently competitive, or you have not yet taken the MCAT and seek preparatory instruction prior to taking the exam
  • you are a graduate of a foreign university and wish to supplement and enrich your studies by taking current, rigorous biomedical coursework, in English, from a US medical school

Students take 17 credit hours of graduate coursework in each of 2 semesters for a total of 34 credit hours for the full program, from August 2016 through May 2017.  All for-credit courses are taught by BCOM faculty.  Enrollment is on a full-time basis only, for the entire academic year.  As the curriculum is very demanding, we recommend against employment while enrolled in the Online Fundamental Biomedical Sciences program.

Courses are scheduled as follows:

Human Biochemistry I (3 cr) Human Biochemistry II (2.0 cr)
Microbiology and Immunology for Health Professionals I (1.5 cr.) Microbiology and Immunology for Health Professionals II (1.5 cr)
Human Gross Anatomy and Imaging I (3.5 cr) Human Gross Anatomy and Imaging II (3.0 cr)
Human Cell Biology and Histology I (3.0 cr) Human Cell Biology and Histology II (1.0 cr)
Prenatal Human Development I (1.0 cr) Prenatal Human Development II (1.0 cr)
Human Physiology I ( 4.0 cr) Human Physiology I (3.0 cr)
Human Pathology I ( 1.0 cr) Human Pathology II (2.5 cr)
Fundamentals of Human Neuroscience   (3.0 cr)

An extensive, optional MCAT preparatory course is available for an additional fee of $2,000 for those students who wish to improve their performance on this examination which is required for US medical school application.  Instruction is provided entirely online by a nationally recognized MCAT preparatory educator.

Students are provided with access to all BCOM pre-medical/pre-health online published resources, which also include links to numerous online information sources on medical and health professional schools and the application process. Upon satisfactory completion of the program (grade of C, 70% or better in all program courses), students may request  a letter of evaluation, summarizing their performance in the program, to be sent to any medical school of their choice.

Upon satisfactory completion (grade of C, 70% or better in all program courses) of the full Online Fundamental Biomedical Sciences program, a student will be awarded a Certificate of Program Completion by the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Students needing official transcripts from the program may request these by contacting the Office of the Registrar at 575-674-2231.
